The Effect of Self-Focused Attention and Ego-Resilience on Smartphone Addiction Among University Students

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of self-focused attention and ego-resilience on smartphone addiction. Participants included 498 college students (201 Male, 297 Female) from Jeollabukdo. A survey comprised of self-reporting scales designed to measure self-focused attention, ego-resilience and smartphone addiction was administered, and the relationships between variables were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. The results of the study are as follows: First, significant correlation between self-focused attention, ego-resilience and smartphone addiction was identified. Second, both the self-absorption and self-focused attention and (i.e., the subfactors of self-focused attention) have a statistically significant effect on smart phone addiction among university students. Third, the sub factors of ego resilience (emotion-regulation and goal orientation) significantly affect smartphone addiction. Results and limitations are discussed.
